Rainforest walks and rock pools on the Blackall Range
The best waterfalls near Maleny and Montville are Kondalilla Falls (a 4.6 km circuit with a 90 metre waterfall), Gardners Falls (a 300 metre walk to Obi Obi Creek), Baxter Falls and Gheerulla Falls. Kondalilla Falls, Montville
One of the most popular hikes on the Sunshine Coast. The 4.6 km circuit in Kondalilla National Park drops from a cool eucalypt plateau into subtropical rainforest, past the 90 metre falls, with a swimming hole at the top of the falls and another below. For a longer day, the 20 km Baroon Pocket to Kondalilla walk takes around five hours.
Gardners Falls, Maleny
One of the easiest swimming holes to reach, just a 300 metre walk from the car park to Obi Obi Creek, with a series of pools along the creek. It is best on weekdays and in the shoulder seasons, as it can get busy on weekends.
Quieter options
Baxter Falls in Kondalilla National Park is a quieter alternative, around two hours return via a suspension bridge through subtropical rainforest. Gheerulla Falls in Mapleton National Park is a 2.7 km walk to a secluded fall you may well have to yourself. Mary Cairncross Rainforest Walk in Maleny is a wheelchair friendly boardwalk loop through 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest.
Adventurous 4x4 drivers can reach Booloumba Falls in Conondale National Park, a 3 km walk and a full day out with turquoise rock pools.
Safety and good planning
Waterfalls can be dangerous. Never dive into creeks or rock pools, as they may hide submerged rocks and logs. Stick to marked trails, follow signage and do not attempt creek crossings after heavy rain. Dogs are generally not allowed in Queensland national parks, so check the rules before you bring one.
