Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk

Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk

Warm subtropical rainforest, tall open eucalypt forest and picturesque waterfalls feature on this 58.8 kilometre trail through the Blackall Range.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk traverses 58.8 kilometres through the Blackall Range and takes at least four days to complete, moving through three national parks with three bush camp sites. Multiple access points make it easy to enjoy shorter half-day and day-length walks within the Great Walk route if you'd prefer a lighter taste.

The Four Sections

1) Baroon Pocket Dam (M1) to Flaxton walkers' camp — 16.1 km one way, allow 7 hours. 2) Flaxton walkers' camp to Ubajee walkers' camp — 13.1 km one way, allow 7 hours. 3) Ubajee walkers' camp to Thilba Thalba walkers' camp — 13.5 km one way, allow 7 hours. 4) Thilba Thalba to Delicia Road entrance (M4) — 16.1 km one way, allow 9–10 hours. Distances and times are estimates and don't include rest stops.

Highlights Along the Way

Narrows lookout over Obi Obi Gorge; Baroon lookout with sweeping views of the dam and catchment; Kondalilla Falls with its 90-metre drop and swimming hole; piccabeen palm forests along Baxter Creek; the steep climb up Gheerulla Bluff for views across Mary Valley to Kenilworth and Gympie; and the scribbly gum ridges out to Thilba Thalba viewpoint.

Track Conditions

Sections traverse rural land between national parks and follow footpaths and old forest roads. Gradients can be very steep and creek crossings become slippery when wet. Do not attempt creek crossings during high rainfall — flash floods can occur without warning. The track is clearly marked but mobile reception is unreliable in many sections.

Before You Set Out

Carry topographic maps (QTopo sheets 9444-13 Witta and 9444-14 Gheerulla Creek), a compass and whistle. Ideal group size is four; never exceed 12. Book walkers' camps in advance via Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Tell a responsible person your plans and expected return, check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast, and review park alerts before leaving.

Walk Softly

Only use existing sites at walkers' camps and leave no trace. Carry out all rubbish (there are no bins), use fuel stoves only (no open fires), and use the hybrid toilets provided at each camp. Please do not disturb wildlife, and clean footwear beforehand to help stop the spread of phytophthora and myrtle rust.
